It was the best of times, it was the worst of times for the Texas Longhorns women’s volleyball team in Louisville, Kentucky on Thursday night. At times, Texas look to be in control of unranked and unseeded Michigan. At other times, the Lady Longhorns looked completely lost.
The first set was a complete domination by the 3rd ranked team in the country. Texas got blocks and hit on their kills to cruise in the first set 25-11.
Then Michigan began to control the 2nd set with timely blocks and huge kills by Junior Outside Hitter Lexi Erwin who had 7 points in that 2nd set. Michigan won the 2nd set 25-21.
After Intermission, Michigan continued it’s run at Texas by attacking the middle of the floor and Lexi Erwin was at it again with 9 kills. Michigan won the 3rd set 25-23.
In the 4th set, it was the best of times again for the Longhorns. The Longhorns dominated by getting points early and often and didn’t give Michigan a chance to get set. Texas won the 4th set 25-12 to set up a 5th and deciding set.
The 5th set began with a 4-0 run by the Longhorns and stretched it out to 8-4. But the Wolverines came back to tie it at 8. Jerritt Elliott called a crucial timeout and it paid off. Texas came out of the timeout with 3 straight points and ended with a kill by Sha’Dare McNeal to win the set 15-11.
The Longhorns will face 5th ranked Oregon on Saturday at 6 pm. You can watch the game on ESPN2.
