Multiple media outlets are reporting that the Texas Longhorns have found their man for the vacant running backs coach position. Arizona State running backs coach Larry Porter will accept the same position at the University of Texas.
Larry Porter was the head coach at the University of Memphis for 2 seasons in 2010 and 2011 where he played football. Before taking the head coaching position at Memphis, he was the running backs coach at LSU. As LSU’s running backs coach, Porter developed strong running backs including 5 running backs that are currently in the NFL. The thing that Larry Porter is very good at is recruiting. At LSU, he was twice named the Rivals.com recruiter of the year.
This is the best move that Mack Brown could have made. Larry Porter has strong connections in Houston and right now the strength of the 2014 class is in Houston. Texas A&M and LSU recruit Houston hard and with both those programs to at least finish in the AP Top 15, Texas needed someone with connections to Houston that players love to play for. Larry Porter is that guy. The 2013 class is nearly complete but their is still time to convince those 2014 recruits that Texas is the place to be for top Texas recruits. If he can turn these running backs into strong, fast running backs and lock up a few blue chip Houston recruits, this will be a home run hire.
