2013 Recruiting Update: Larry Porter Hits The Ground Running

You know when you get a new job or a promotion, those first few weeks are almost always your most productive. Larry Porter is doing exactly that.

Larry Porter called and offered Memphis (TN) Running Back Mark Dodson Jr. a scholarship. Dodson Jr. is already committed and has signed the letter of intent to Ole Miss. Now the letter of intent isn’t official until he enrolls at Ole Miss so that’s a name to keep in mind.

But wait, there’s more!

Plantation (FL) Running Back Alex Collins has also heard from Texas and is very interested in the Texas Longhorns. According to Alex, his top 5 is Wisconsin, Florida, Miami (FL), Arkansas and Florida State. He already has visited Wisconsin, Florida and Florida State and plans to visit Arkansas and Miami (FL) later this month. With the potential sanctions coming down next week against Miami (FL), Texas might be able to convince Alex Collins that he should use that 5th official visit to come to Austin.

My Take: I understand the reason to create depth at the Running back position but at some point, you need to focus on other positions. Texas has Daniel Gresham in the fold for next year and don’t sleep on him. He has size and speed. He reminds me of Cedric Benson and Joe Bergeron. We could have 6 scholarship running backs starting in 2014. That’s a lot of clutter. Plus, is Texas going to focus on a power running game or go to more pistol or spread formation? I appreciate the effort, but I am sure his services would be better served getting those top 2014 Texas recruits.
