Myck Kabongo scored 13 points in his season debut as the Texas Longhorns beat the Iowa State Cyclones 89-86 in double overtime for the biggest win of the year.
Five Longhorns were in double figures and even though this was Myck Kabongo’s return, his teammates had their best game of the season. Connor Lammert had a career night with 14 points, 4 assists and 3 blocks. Sheldon McClellan had 18 points and went a perfect 8-8 from the free throw line.
The Longhorns had their best shooting night of the year after coming off one of the worst shooting performances against the Oklahoma State Cowboys. The Texas Longhorns shot 51% from the field and went 20-25 from the free throw line. The Iowa State Cyclones shot 35% from the field but shot 33% from the 3 point line which kept them in the game. It looked like the Longhorns would lose the game when Javan Felix turned the ball over after being confused on who was taking the ball out from the end court. The Cyclones took over and hit a 3 pointer to go up 58-57. The Longhorns were not able to take the lead for the rest of regulation, but were able to get 1 chance for a 3 pointer at the end. Big Papi (Ioannis Papapetrou) hit a game tying 3 to send the game into overtime.
The first overtime saw Myck Kabongo and Jonathan Holmes foul out of the game but the Longhorns didn’t give up as they took over in the second overtime. A last second steal from Connor Lammert sealed the biggest win of the season for the Texas Longhorns.
The Longhorns are now 11-13 and maybe, just maybe, might be playing for an NIT bid.
