It was the best of times, it was the worst of times but Texas was able to survive and beat the Sacramento State Hornets 6-5. The Longhorns were able to get on the board first in the 1st inning with a Mark Payton bunt single to put the Longhorns up 1-0.

In the 3rd inning, Texas was able to pull away even more. With the bases loaded, Mark Payton came through again with a single through the right side and 2 runs came across to go up 3-0. The Longhorns went up 4-0 on a fielder’s choice by Carter.

The Longhorns were able to extend it to a 6-0 lead. Then the Top of the 8th inning happened.

With Parker French removed from the game, the Hornets got a lead off single. Then a double by Lukes to put runners at 1st and 3rd with no outs. Longhorns relief pitcher Toller Boardman hit Will Soto to load the bases with no outs. Then Boardman walked the next batter to bring in a run.

Then Corey Knebel came in and gives up a double to make it 6-3. Then David Del Grande get a single to bring the Hornets within 2. Then Knebel walks another batter, then throws a wild pitch to make the score 6-5 Texas. Knebal then walks freshmen Chris Lewis and Augie finally pulls the plug.

So with the bases loaded, no outs and after already given up 5 runs, junior college transfer Ty Marlow comes in to try and save the game. Jacob Felts picks off David Del Grande at 3rd to get the first out. And even though he did give a single, he was able to get out of the inning without giving up a run and was able to save the game in the 9th.

3 Stars of the Game.

3. Ty Marlow

To come into that situation and get out of the 8th without giving up any more runs and shutting it down in the 9th is clutch. Get this boy some coffee because coffee is for closers.

2. Mark Payton

Mark Payton went 4-5 with 3 RBIs and scored 2 runs as well. I think Payton solidified himself in the cleanup spot with that performance.

1. Parker French

If Mark Payton solidified his role as a cleanup hitter, Parker French solidify his role as the ace of this pitching staff. A 7 inning shutout and only gave up 3 hits. An outstanding performance by the sophomore and we only hope for more as the season move on.

The Texas Longhorns will play the Hornets Saturday at 2pm and Sunday at 1pm.
