Spring practices have begun for the Texas Longhorns. From February 19th until February 27th, Hook’em Headlines will preview each position group. Today we will preview the linebackers.

February 19th: Offensive Line

February 20th: Tight Ends

February 21st: Wide Receivers

February 22nd: Running Backs

February 23rd: Quarterbacks

February 24th: Defensive Line

Coach:

Manny Diaz is the defensive coordinator but his position group is the linebackers.

Starters:

Jordan Hicks is returning to the starting lineup after suffering a hip injury in the Ole Miss game. Steve Edmond is the likely starter at middle linebacker but might get some competition for that spot. Demarco Cobbs and Kendall Thompson also played as starters.

Key Reserves:

Dalton Santos was a beast on special teams, but was inconsistent as a linebacker. Peter Jinkens got more playing time late in the 2012 season but he made that time count. In the Alamo Bowl, Jinkens had 8 tackles and an interception. Tevin Jackson had 7 tackles and a sack in the Alamo bowl.

Spring Outlook:

Going into the 2012 season, the only linebacker returning was Jordan Hicks. Although the defense was a little shaky at first, the linebackers looked lost after Jordan Hicks went down against Ole Miss. Now with Hicks returning and these linebackers getting the experience last year, the linebackers should be better in 2013. Considering how bad they were in 2012, they can only go up. I am expecting Jordan Hicks, Demarco Cobbs and Peter Jinkens as starters with Kendall Thompson, Dalton Santos, Steve Edmond and Tevin Jackson playing significant minutes.
