Spring practices have begun at the University of Texas. From February 19th until February 27th, Hook’em Headlines will preview each position group and our spring outlook for each position group. Today we will preview the secondary.

February 19th: Offensive Line

February 20th: Tight Ends

February 21st: Wide Receivers

February 22nd: Running Backs

February 23rd: Quarterbacks

February 24th: Defensive Line

February 25th: Linebackers

Duana Akina is in his 12th year as defensive backs coach.

Quandre Diggs and Carrington Byndom are the two starters that I believe are going to be starters this coming season.

Key Reserves:

Adrian Phillips, Mykkele Thompson, Duke Thomas, and Josh Turner all are expected to contribute to this team in the fall.

Spring Outlook:

Quandre Diggs has been working out at safety in the offseason and will likely take over for Kenny Vaccaro at free safety. Duke Thomas will take over the starting cornerback role with Diggs moving to safety. I believe that Josh Turner will be the starter at strong safety. He isn’t the most athletic safety but he is always in the right position. One of the drawbacks of Kenny Vaccaro’s play is that he would take the wrong angles and then huge gaps would open up. Here is the play against OU where Vaccaro took a bad angle on the play:

While Coach Diaz likes to blitz the defensive backs, his schemes were too complicated for the defense to fully execute. The defensive backs should stick to coverage schemes with the occasional blitz when the situation calls for it.
