On Saturday, the Texas Longhorns had their first 2015 commit in Sherman (TX) offensive lineman Aaron Garza made his commitment official. He is 6’4″ and 300 pounds as a high school sophomore. The only highlight film we could find was on Rivals.com. Here is the link (might need a paid subscription).
I understand the sentiment from many (and I mean many) that are weary of offering kids this early in the recruiting process. The recruitment of high school football players in Texas has been changing often. Unlike in years past where Texas could wait until junior day to offer these recruits, out of state schools have already established relationships with these younger players to get them to come to their school. Alabama already has a 2015 commitment from Texas (Deionte Thompson) and are looking to get even more of the top Texas recruits. Texas A&M is seizing it’s “Johnny Football” momentum and have already gotten some of the top Texas recruits. Texas needed to change the game or get left behind. That’s what “Sophomore day” was about; gaining some momentum for the 2015 class. The Longhorns did just that.
