An Ode To The Frank Erwin Center

Yesterday, the University of Texas announced plans for a new UT Medical school. In this new plan for the Medical school and new buildings on the University of Texas campus, UT officials announced that the Frank Erwin Center will be moved and the current building will be demolished.

The Frank Erwin Center (aka The Drum) opened in 1977 apparently as a Cold War nuclear bunker but instead was used as a multi-purpose event arena. The arena has hosted many events in it’s history. Many musicians  like John Denver, Jay-Z, Aerosmith, and others have played at the Frank Erwin Center. It is also the home of Texas men’s and women’s basketball teams. Here is the Longhorn Network’s tribute last November to the Frank Erwin Center:

The master plan states that the Frank Erwin Center will be demolished within 6-15 years. I would expect the demolition to be closer to 15 years while the Texas athletic department tries to find a home for the Men’s and women’s basketball teams.

But we bid the ole Drum farewell as it will be demolished to make room for the new medical school. You’re not so unique design might be missed.
