In an article written by ESPN’s Phil Steele, the Texas Longhorns are his pick as a dark horse national title contender. Here is an excerpt from the Dallas Morning News blog entry about the ESPN insider article:
“Currently Las Vegas has them favored in all 12 of their games, which is a big reason they are my No. 1 pick this year as a dark horse national title contender,” Steele said. “Look for the Horns to easily top this win total, and the +105 gives you even more value.”
Although to some, this seems like a crazy assertion to make. The Texas Longhorns as a darkhorse for the national title? Ridiculous! However, that might not be as crazy as it sounds. In the last 5 BCS National Championship game, 3 of the 10 participants won 9 games or less the previous season and earned a berth in the national championship game the next season. Those teams were the 2008 Florida Gators (2007: 9-4), 2010 Auburn Tigers (2009: 8-5), and the 2012 Notre Dame Fighting Irish (2011: 8-5). Yes, the Texas Longhorns haven’t played up to the Texas Standard that Darrell K Royal set for this program but last year is last year. Time to focus on the future.
