Just as Texas’ hiring of Charlie Strong appeared to take any number of turns before arriving at its final destination, a number of assistant coaches have reportedly accepted or agreed to interview for positions.
One such case as we covered on Thursday was Texas’ hiring of Louisville defensive coordinator Vance Bedford. Bedford seemed a logical choice as he served under Strong dating back to their shared tenure at Florida.
There’s only one problem: Bedford hasn’t actually been hired. Not yet, anyway.
I’m interviewing with coach strong. I’m not hired at this time

This appears to be semantics on the surface. As we noted earlier this week, Bedford’s name was attached to Louisville’s’ search for a replacement head coach. While Cardinals AD Tom Jurich eventually selected former-Louisville headman Bobby Petrino, perhaps this delay was simply Strong allowing his colleague an opportunity for the big chair. Accordingly, expect Bedford to accept the defensive coordinator position at Texas sometime this weekend.
Another reported move, Oklahoma State offensive line coach Joe Wickline is reportedly “in the mix” for the same position on Strong’s staff. Wickline is well regarded throughout college football. It would be a tremendous coup for Strong if he can lure him away from Oklahoma State for a lateral move (admittedly with a higher salary).
With in-person recruiting beginning in the middle of the month, Strong will need to pull together a staff within the week. Keep your internet machine tuned to Hook’em Headlines for the latest Longhorns news and developments.
