According to Yahoo Sports, former Texas defensive coordinator Manny Diaz was hired for the same position at Louisiana Tech.
Diaz came to Texas following a successful 2010 season as Mississippi State’s defensive coordinator. He led a resurgent defense that improved from 71st in the nation in scoring defense in 2009 to 22nd a year later. The unit also jumped from 62nd against the run to 17th.
In 2011, Texas had the number one defense in the Big 12. The Longhorns led the conference in both rushing and pass defense. Even with a successful first year in the program the honeymoon between Diaz and Texas fans was short-lived.
Pressure to fire Diaz had been building following a 2012 season that saw the defense give up more yards per game than any previous unit in school history. Brown stuck by his young coordinator but hired former Longhorn defensive coordinator Greg Robinson over the summer as a quality control coach. Many fans wondered if Robinson was hired to replace Diaz if the defense continued to struggle. They got their answer two games into the 2013 season. Diaz was fired by Mack Brown following an embarrassing 40-21 loss to BYU on national television. Texas was gashed for a school-record 550 yards on the ground in that game.
Louisiana Tech ranked 69th in the nation in total defense last season. The Bulldogs gave up 194.8 rushing yards per game.
