Texas Longhorns baseball beats UTPA with late-inning walk off hit

The 2014 Texas Longhorn baseball team has had a flair for the dramatic early in the season. Texas fans are just happy the results have been positive.

Jacob Felts laced a single to right center to score Alex Silver with two outs helping Texas (6-3) pull out a come-from-behind victory 2-1 over UT-Pan American in 11 innings. It is the Longhorns’ second walk-off win this season.

The early performance by Augie Garrido’s crew is a departure from the 2013 season when Texas was prone to lose one run games. Maybe an offseason of working on playing as a team is paying off.

The late-inning rally started with a walk to Silver. Madison Carter sacrificed Silver to second. Collin Shaw grounded out to second to advance Silver to third. Felts followed with a line drive hit to win the game.

Pitching ruled the day on Tuesday. UT-Pan American pitcher Alex Henson allowed two hits over six innings. Texas managed just four hits off of seven Broncos pitchers.

UTPA (5-4) struck first with an RBI single by Jesus Garcia that scored Michael Baca in the third inning.

Broncos pitching kept the Longhorns off the scoreboard until the ninth inning. Kacy Clemens and Andy McGuire walked. Jeremy Montalbano couldn’t execute the sacrifice and pinch-runner Weston Hall was forced out at third. A wild pitch moved runners up to second and third. Tres Barrera walked to load the bases. Ben Johnson followed with a sacrifice fly to score pinch-runner Carter with the tying run.

Nathan Thornhill (3-0) pitched three innings to get the victory. John Curtiss started his first game since 2012. Curtiss, coming back from Tommy John surgery, pitched two scoreless innings.

Texas travels to Houston this weekend for the Houston College Classic. The Longhorns will open against Rice on Friday at 7:00 PM.

Tuesday’s Studs and Duds
Felts coming through with the game-winning hit in only his second at-bat of the season.
Eight Longhorns pitchers kept UTPA bats quiet, scattering 10 hits over 11 innings.
Mark Payton singled to push his hitting streak to 18 games.
Tres Barrera continues to press at the plate. Barerra was 0-3 with a walk.
CJ Hinojosa went 0-5. Hinojosa is 0-12 in his last three games.
