NCAA President Mark Emmert, as well as the members of the organization, are right to fear the potential impact of the NLRB’s recent ruling that Northwestern’s football players are employees of the university. However, the approach Emmert takes here stands to push more into the pro-union category rather than the other way around.

Unlike many schools, Texas does generally allow players who leave the football program early to return and earn their degree. However, this isn’t guaranteed by the university nor does it address the fact that most schools do not submit to this practice. As usual, the NCAA’s efforts come up dramatically short.
