Not only does the NCAA’s asinine regulations prevent the athletic program from stepping in to help this poor kid, but the school itself sent a memo aimed at discouraging support to the television station that reported on the story. While the majority of sports consumers still support the NCAA, its situations like this that are turning the tide towards the exploited players.

Kendall Sheffield visits Texas Longhorns after state track victories – SB Nation

As though Texas needed additional reasons to pursue five-star cornerback Kendall Sheffield, he won gold medals for both the 110-meter hurdles and the 300-meter hurdles. So basically he’s uber fast and possesses great leaping ability, both essential qualities for defensive backs. The Longhorns are going to have plenty of competition for Sheffield’s services.

As we discussed yesterday, Zach Gentry has the size and passing ability to make him one of the elite pro-style passers in college football. While some prefer the more mobile and athletic type of quarterback — such as the author of the article — there certainly is a place for such signal callers in today’s game. Gentry won’t be ready to start for the Longhorns or anyone else for a few years, so that should give Joe Wickline time to develop a quality offensive line to protect the young man.
