The Texas Longhorns and the UC-Irvine Anteaters will meet Wednesday in a rematch to determine who moves on to play Vanderbilt. Texas will have revenge on its mind after losing to UC-Irvine 3-1 on Saturday.
Augie Garrido has named Chad Hollingsworth as his starter. Hollingsworth pitched a complete game against Texas A&M in the Houston Regional to help the Longhorns win the regional. For Hollingsworth, it’s a start he is ready to make.
“I’m ready to go. It’s nice to know that everyone wants me out there and that they’re going to give me the ball and I’m just ready to go and give my team a chance to win the whole thing. I want it bad. I want to be out there for my guys,” Hollingsworth told reporters on Tuesday.
All that made the decision easy for Garrido.
“I like his attitude,” Garrido said about Hollingsworth. “I like his competitiveness and he wants the ball. He wants to be on the mound. He bugged us all year long to start, but he was just too valuable in the other role. But then when we lost Peters we had to go do something.”
UC-Irvine has not announced its starter yet. Bringing back Andrew Morales on short rest doesn’t seem like an option after he threw 108 pitches versus Texas on Saturday. Evan Brock threw 44 pitches against Vanderbilt on Monday. He also pitched multiple innings in the Texas game Saturday, so he is probably only available for a few innings out of the bullpen. This means the Anteaters will likely have to turn to Evan Manarino. Manarino made 10 starts during the regular season, where he was 4-3 with a 2.79 ERA in 58 innings. His last start was on May 13, although he has been working out of the bullpen the last few weeks.
Game time is 7:00 PM CT on the ESPN Network.
