Texas football kicks off the 2016 season on Sunday against the Notre Dame Fighting Irish. It’s one of the biggest games of an opening weekend stuffed with big games and the stakes are high for both programs.

For Texas, it’s an opportunity for a program-reviving win on national television. Charlie Strong is under tremendous pressure to win in 2016 and begin competing at a high level, as Texas is accustomed to. Defeating the Irish to start the season would be a tremendous boost for Strong and the program moving forward.

That will be a tall task, however. Notre Dame enters the game as the No. 10 team in the nation with an eye on the College Football Playoff. They have talent on both sides of the ball and boost tremendous athleticism in their spread offensive attack. They present a tremendous challenge to start a difficult opening stretch of the season.

Last season, of course, things did not go well for Texas in the opener against Notre Dame. The Longhorns were blown off the field 38-3 in South Bend. That loss sent the team reeling as they started 2015 just 1-4. Don’t expect a similar outcome this year, however.

This Longhorn team is ready to turn the corner and return to their winning ways. They have a prime opportunity in front of them to announce that return on Sunday against the Irish. They have the talent and the drive to score an upset in this game but they will have to execute at an elite level.

Here are the five keys to victory for Texas against Notre Dame.
