Which of the multiple teams for the Texas football program that fell short of expectations since the 2000 campaign fall among the seven worst?

Looking back at the worst of the worst for the Texas football program is never a fun thing to do, but it is necessary to improve heading into the future. It is good that Texas football heads into the 2019 regular season with the program turning itself around.

Under third-year head Texas football coach Tom Herman, this program is moving in the right direction heading into the 2019 regular season. The preseason Amway Coaches Poll slotted Texas as the No. 10 team in the nation. That is the most deserving top 10 ranking Texas got in nearly a full decade. Although, there’s a good argument that Texas at least deserved a top 10 ranking heading into the 2010 season, just not ending it.

However, Texas had its fair share of ups and downs for the past two decades. Texas won a BCS National Championship over the USC Trojans back in 2006. Texas fell just short of winning yet another national title under former head coach to cap the 2009 season when they lost to Nick Saban and the Alabama Crimson Tide.

The ending of the 2009 season seemed to be the downfall for Texas heading into the 2010’s. Brown didn’t have his best of years to cap his tenure on the Forty Acres from 2010-2013. Fellow former head coach Charlie Strong had an even worse tenure from 2014-2016, including a loss to the Kansas Jayhawks and even missing bowl eligibility in a weaker Big 12.

Yet, Herman is picking the pieces back up after a 10-4 2018 season and a win in the Sugar Bowl over the No. 5 ranked Georgia Bulldogs. Things appear to be trending up from here.

Here’s a look at the seven worst seasons for the Texas Longhorns football program since the turn of the century in 2000.
