1. Quarterback Play

At the end of the day, the fate of this Texas team will come down to quarterback play. While Strong still hasn’t announced who that starter will be for this Sunday, the team will need Tyrone Swoopes or Shane Buechele to lead this offense.

Last year, Swoopes’ poor performance sunk the Horns. He completed just 7 of 22 passes for 93 yards with a QBR of just 8.2 for the game. Texas has been desperately searching for a quarterback to step up and lead this offense. They thought it would have been Swoopes last year at Notre Dame. Now, they’ll try again with whoever gets the nod for this Sunday’s game.

Whoever it it is, they will have the benefit of an improved team around them. Texas’ power running game and athletic receivers combined with Gilbert’s wide-open offense will provide quick, easy reads to help this offense get into rhythm. While the entire game won’t fall on the QB’s shoulders, they’ll need to make plays when it matters to put this team over the top.

Without competent quarterback play, any hope for a Texas upset is likely dead in the water.

Will Texas put it all together and pull off the upset on Sunday?
