Linebackers – Gary Johnson and Marqez Bimage

Gary Johnson addressed one of Tom Herman and Todd Orlando’s top needs at Texas – a big, physical, imposing LB to anchor the 3-4 defense. And, play right away.

Coach Herman said at his press conference that Orlando spent Christmas Break looking at tape of potential recruits to play the Mike LB position. Orlando found Gary Johnson out of the JUCO ranks and implored Herman to go after him.

Herman convinced Johnson to come to Texas and now he is a candidate to start in 2017. Herman said they will see how the pieces come together at the LB position, especially utilizing Malik Jefferson, but he is excited that they found Johnson to potentially anchor the LB position.

As for Marqez Bimage, he is the type of hybrid LB that Coach Orlando loves to utilize in his defensive scheme. Bimage can be a force from multiple positions, similar to how Orlando used the LB crew at Houston to wreak havoc.

Johnson is expected to be a factor right away, while Bimage will look to earn playing time behind returning edge-rushers like Breckyn Hager and Malcolm Roach.
