Texas Football Recruiting: Breaking down the 2018 quarterback signees

The slightly more highly touted of the two quarterbacks is a Newbury Park High School product and California native Cameron Rising. This four-star pro-style quarterback has a huge arm and an underrated ability to scramble out of the pocket to make things happen.

Rising was a very hotly contested prospect with 25 offers coming his way. Texas actually did not look like the favorite to land Rising when it came down to his final decision. The Sooners and Horns were some of the favorites to nab him while the Oregon Ducks and UCLA Bruins were in the mix too.

His signing with Texas, and enrolling for spring camp, were fantastic surprises for Texas. Rising does seem to have that step in his game where he could gain control of this offense pretty early in his college career. Thompson has more parts of his game that need development while Rising is a polished thrower.

Rising also showed the ability to make some solid and composed throws in the Texas spring football game. Both Rising and Thompson had their ups and downs during the spring game, but the results were largely pleasing for the Texas fans. Namely, Rising showed some great footwork and spot on accuracy at times.

With a big arm and the ability to make most any throw required for the Texas offense, Rising is a great fit given his skill set. He can also use his legs when needed which might actually make him a better fit for Herman’s scheme than Sam Ehlinger.
