There’s no question who the most advantageous freshman wide receiver physically will be for the Horns to use in the passing game this season. Four-star Houston, TX, native wide receiver Brennan Eagles has the potential to take the role of star junior wideout Collin Johnson if he decides to leave Texas early for the 2019 NFL Draft.

Even if Johnson stays for his senior season in 2019, it would only open up more room for the likes of Eagles and fellow junior wide receiver Lil’Jordan Humphrey in the passing game. The coaching staff should be priming Eagles for a huge role in the next two or three years, and some big playing time in 2018.

By season’s end, the three top wide receivers for the Horns could very well be Johnson, Humphrey, and Eagles. Johnson is the current starter for Texas at the x-wide receiver spot. Humphrey could play at either x or h-wide receiver, and thrive, given his versatility and elusiveness in the open field.

So much of how Eagles and the rest of the Texas receiving corps fares in 2018 rides on the quarterback play. If the Texas passing game and offensive line holds up better this fall, the wide receivers will see the direct benefit. That’s a lot of pressure across the board on the offensive starters, but we should expect big things out of Eagles for the next three or four years.
