As one of only two five-star signees for the Horns for the 2018 Texas football recruiting class, highly touted safety B.J. Foster could see the field immediately in some form or fashion. Every Big 12 defense could always use additional help in the secondary and the Horns are no exception, despite the solid performance from that level of the defense last season.

The Texas secondary is deep for the upcoming season, but there is ample opportunity for Foster to earn a starting spot by the end of the year. He’ll start out the regular season sitting behind the ultra-reliable senior safety P.J. Locke III. Although Locke III is one of the most underrated defensive backs for the Horns, he can’t be in the long-term plans for this group since his eligibility runs out after this season.

That means that Herman and Orlando will more than likely put Foster on the field at strategic times early in the regular season. One interesting matchup where Herman and Orlando could try their hand with Foster in comes against USC in Week 3. USC has a ton of young talent on the offensive side of the ball. It would be a great opportunity for Foster to get some looks against similar players in terms of skill and experience.

Yet, at 6-foot-1 and under 190 pounds, Foster will need to put on some size this year before he can be counted on in every aspect of a game that safeties need to thrive. As the third best safety in the nation for the 2018 recruiting cycle, the expectations will continue to remain high for Foster throughout his freshman season.
