Texas Football: Sam Ehlinger could be making a case for Heisman

A magical season building for Texas football could continue if Sam Ehlinger keeps playing the way he did against the Oklahoma Sooners.

Although it would take a huge stretch of performances even in the coming weeks from the starting quarterback of Texas football, making his case for a Heisman campaign is getting much easier. Sophomore Austin native Sam Ehlinger is having a huge 2018 campaign so far and posted another big outing in the Red River win over the No. 7 ranked Oklahoma Sooners to give the Longhorns five straight wins.

Most of the Heisman attention was falling on Oklahoma quarterback Kyler Murray coming into the Red River Shootout. Yet, Ehlinger actually outplayed Murray to the tune of five total touchdowns. Both Ehlinger and Murray racked up five total touchdowns. But Murray and the Sooners had three turnovers on the day while Ehlinger had none.

Moreover, Ehlinger also had 314 passing yards and 72 rushing yards. Murray has a few more total yards on the day, but Ehlinger was the one who got it done for his team when it was all said and done. That was something that Ehlinger wasn’t able to do last year, but has so far this fall.

On the season now, Ehlinger has 17 total touchdowns and just two interceptions. His turnaround in the production department is amazing compared to where he was at last year as a true freshman. The faith in Ehlinger from head coach Tom Herman is paying off now.

With how much momentum Texas is picking up now, Ehlinger is only going to get more and more positive attention due to the way he’s playing. If this Texas offense keeps putting Ehlinger in a position to succeed like this too, his stat line is going to look better and better throughout the rest of the regular season.

Sports Illustrated still has Murray and Alabama Crimson Tide quarterback Tua Tagovailoa as the two favorites for the Heisman. Watch out for Ehlinger to make his way up that list if he keeps up this level of play.

In Week 7, Ehlinger and the Horns get head coach Matt Rhule and the Baylor Bears at home. A struggling Baylor defense is a great opportunity for Ehlinger to build his campaign for the 2018 Heisman Trophy.
