Texas Basketball vs. Radford: 5 takeaways from upset loss to Highlanders
3. Back court issues
We’ll continue to highlight the struggles of the back court in this game because there was one player that needs to step up for Texas basketball sometime soon. Sophomore point guard Matt Coleman struggled again as he’s not making the strides many expected him to in his second year on the Forty Acres.
All season, Coleman got heavy minutes on the floor. He led Texas in playing time in this game, with only three minutes spent on the bench for him. Coleman, Osetkowski, and Roach Jr. all played more minutes than any of the Highlanders did. None of the three played exceptionally well, at least on offense. Osetkowski at least had a game-high 17 rebounds.
However, Coleman finished with nine points, one rebound, two assists, and one steal. He did shoot better from the field than Osetkowski and Roach Jr. at 37.5 percent. But, his shooting percentage still wasn’t good by many considerations. The turnover percentage was way too high for Coleman since he should be the facilitator of this offense.
Texas should start give more playing time to freshman point guard Courtney Ramey if it is looking to find some answers to its scoring issue. This team should be posting 75-80 points, at a minimum, against an undersized non-major conference opponent like Radford. That scoring responsibility should also fall mainly on the back court. It has to get better.
