Texas Basketball: 5 victory takeaways vs. Iowa State
4. Jase Febres standing out
If not for the performance that Texas basketball got out of sharpshooting sophomore small forward/shooting guard Jase Febres here, this game might not have been in hand. Febres had himself a career day by going 9-for-11 from the field and 8-for-10 from beyond the arc which amounted to 26 points.
Texas did have three other players score in double figures, but none came close to the impact Febres had on this game. Febres couldn’t miss from deep and really stretched the floor well for the Horns. Head Texas basketball coach Shaka Smart has to love what he saw from Febres here.
Not only was this a big showing from Febres, it’s a great sign to see him standing out like this at a pivotal time in the regular season. To make a big run through the Big 12 and NCAA Tournament, the Horns need Febres to show out like this more often. His shooting was a roller coaster ride through most of the regular season.
On the season, he is shooting just 38 percent from the field and just over 36 percent from three-point range. He went off in this game and could be finding his stroke at the right time. This was also the best scoring effort we’ve seen from Febres this year. His next best came against the Kansas State Wildcats and Baylor Bears earlier this season, where he posted 23 points in each outing.
