Texas Basketball: 5 victory takeaways vs. Iowa State
2. Matt Coleman’s production running dry
There was one point guard for Texas basketball that stood out in this 17-point victory over Iowa State. As many would expect it to be, sophomore point guard Matt Coleman had a big opportunity to show that he’s steadying out his game on both ends of the court. With Iowa State star point guard Lindell Wigginton largely ineffective, Coleman didn’t take full advantage.
Meanwhile, freshman guard Courtney Ramey took over in place of the faltering Coleman. Ramey posted the second-best point total for the Horns in this game, with 18. Coleman finished with just five point on 2-of-7 shooting from the field. At least Coleman did have a nice day distributing the ball, finishing with a game-high 10 assists.
It doesn’t seem like Coleman has any luck in his two seasons thus far on the Forty Acres in getting his shot consistent. He was effective facilitating the offense as he posted double-digit assists to go along with just one turnover. Although, his defensive production didn’t count for much as he finished with no steals and four rebounds.
He has only shot better than 43 percent from the field once in his past five outings, which led to no more than 11 points registered in any of those games. Coleman is finding his role as more of the facilitator of this offense while Ramey is emerging as the better natural scorer. That could be a decent combination moving forward for this back court if Smart decides to stick with it.
