Texas Basketball: 3 reasons Horns upset Kansas amid Big 12 Tourney
1. Previous body of work vs. Kansas
Even in the road loss to Kansas back in January at the beginning of the Big 12 slate, Texas basketball was very competitive at Allen Fieldhouse. If not for a missed three-point attempt from sophomore small forward/shooting guard Jase Febres, Texas could’ve won that game in the dying seconds.
Contrary to the Horns this season, Kansas had quite a few absences and injury issues that clearly hampered the effectiveness of the rotation. Kansas has also had to put too much of the offensive burden on the likes of freshman big Dedric Lawson, freshman guard Devon Dotson, and breakthrough guard Ochai Agbaji.
Kansas is set to be missing solid two-way player Lagerald Vick in the Big 12 Tournament due to some off-the-court occurrences. He might return for the NCAA Tournament, but that doesn’t look too likely at this point. This is something that the Horns can take advantage of with a very shorthanded Kansas squad facing them up in the first round.
All of the latest reports indicate that Vick is on a leave of absence and Bill Self recently stated to the media that “there’s no point in asking” for when Vick will be returning. All this amounts to a tough coaching job that Self will have to turn things around against the Horns compared to how the Jan. 29 meeting on the Forty Acres went.
