Since the recent move of the former four-star recruit and to-be redshirt sophomore DeMarvion Overshown is about to take place in spring camp from safety to linebacker, there could be a more clear path to early playing time for any 2020 signee at the position. And the highest rated safety commit in the 2020 Texas football recruiting class that enrolled early is four-star Xavion Alford.

The 6-foot and 182 pound Shadow Creek defensive back and Pearland, TX, native was a big get for the Longhorns. He landed on the Forty Acres over competing programs that were pursuing him hard like the LSU Tigers and rival Texas A&M Aggies. This was a huge get that could fit well in the new scheme with recently hired defensive coordinator Chris Ash.

Losing the commitment of Alford was definitely a threat when Texas got rid of former defensive coordinator Todd Orlando. Most of the recruitment of Alford was handled while Orlando was the defensive coordinator and one of the primary coaches that targeted him.

Alford ranks as the nation’s No. 138 2020 high school prospect and the No. 8 safety. He also ranks as the No. 22 prospect out of the state of Texas. His blazing speed and solid ball skills could help him get on the field in key spots this year earlier than most would at his position.

He is one of two safeties out of Texas’ 2020 recruiting class that enrolled early. Four-star Jerrin Thompson is the other.
