3. Courtney Ramey, Guard

A player that was trending in the right direction for the Texas basketball program prior to the college basketball season cancellation was sophomore guard Courtney Ramey. The Longhorns needed a bigger season out of Ramey than they got in 2019-20 if they were to take a complete step forward this season, but that didn’t happen all the way through.

Like he did last season, Ramey got hotter once Big 12 play began. But his hot stretch came even later this season than it did last in conference play. Offense really came and went for Ramey this season, with his defensive rating actually improving both in conference play and overall compared to his freshman campaign.

In 31 games played, Ramey averaged 10.9 points per game, 3.9 rebounds, and 2.9 assists, while shooting 40.1 percent from the field, 31.3 percent from beyond the arc, and 70.9 percent from the charity stripe. Most of the shooting percentages Ramey posted last season dipped this year, which was not a good sign for his development.

Maybe the positive trends for Ramey would’ve continued if the Longhorns got to finish out the season that was. But it is interesting how identical Ramey’s numbers were in conference play this year compared to last. He had the exact same number of win shares per 40 minutes in Big 12 play as a freshman as he did as a sophomore (.077).
