About the closest thing that the Longhorns might get to snagging another cornerback commit in the 2021 recruiting class would be getting a pledge from four-star Bishop Alemany athlete Jaylin Smith. This 5-foot-11 and 180 pound Mission Hills, CA, native does at least have Texas among his finalist schools ahead of an unset commitment date up to this point.

Texas might not need another true cornerback commit in the 2021 class since they landed a retroactive commitment to the 2020 recruiting class by snagging four-star former Baylor Bears corner Jahdae Barron earlier in the offseason. Adding Barron makes it so that Ibraheem might be all that the Longhorns need until the 2022 class.

However, Smith would still be a great addition to the 2021 class. He ranks as the nation’s No. 292 2021 high school prospect, No. 19 athlete, and No. 28 prospect out of California (247Sports Composite). He could fill a role as either a defensive back or a wide receiver/running back hybrid that also makes an impact on special teams.

The 247Sports Crystal Ball Predictions do give the edge to head coach Clay Helton and the USC Trojans to land the commitment of Smith over the rest of the field. And the Rivals FutureCast has 100 percent of their analysts and publishers picking Smith to commit to USC. It looks like he might have gotten away from Texas, but they could still try and make a late run for this versatile defensive back/skill position athlete.
