Texas Football: 3 hidden gems from Longhorns 2020 class
The best name that still likely most haven’t heard of from this 2020 Longhorns recruiting class is the former Oklahoma State Cowboys three-star Longview defensive tackle commit Sawyer Goram-Welch. This 6-foot-4 and 280 pound Longview, TX, native did not sit among the mainstream prospects that the Longhorns usually pursue.
However, Texas defensive line coach Oscar Giles did a great job helping Herman and recently hired defensive coordinator Chris Ash get ahold of the commitment of Goram-Welch. He decommitted from Oklahoma State back on Dec. 7, 2019. About five days later, he took an official visit with Texas. And then two days after that, he was officially committed to Texas and ready to sign as an early enrollee after the Early Signing Period.
Goram-Welch was a great get for the Longhorns for a number of reasons. He is a very multiple defensive lineman that could be great to develop in the high pressure Ash defensive scheme. He can anchor the Texas defensive line if he puts on some size, but he will need to add weight likely anywhere he plays in the front seven.
This underrated three-star defensive lineman ranks as the nation’s No. 1,217 2020 high school prospect, No. 93 defensive tackle, and No. 153 prospect out of Texas (247Sports Composite). He could wind up as either a defensive end or smaller and quicker defensive tackle, wherever the coaching staff feels he’ll fit best on the Forty Acres.
