3) Herman’s Texas football/Houston decommits that succeeded elsewhere: Terrel Bernard

This is the lone player on this list that really traces back to Herman’s time as the Houston head coach. Herman did really well building up the Houston football program via adding talent on the recruiting trail. That’s much like he’s done with the Longhorns so far. But he didn’t stick around with Houston for all that long to see how all that talent turned out.

One of the more underrated commitments that got away from Houston before Herman could see out too long a head coaching tenure with that program was the former three-star linebacker recruit and current Baylor junior starter Terrel Bernard. As one of the more productive and versatile starting defensive players for the Baylor defense this year, Bernard has really made a name for himself in Waco.

Bernard was committed to Houston in their 2017 recruiting class as Herman and then defensive coordinator Todd Orlando were winning his interests over. But once Herman and Orlando bolted for the Forty Acres, Bernard would re-open his recruitment and eventually sign with now former head coach Matt Rhule and Baylor.

Since landing with the Bears, Bernard has registered 180 career total tackles, 16.0 tackles for loss, eight sacks, three interceptions, two pass deflections, and three fumble recoveries (one of which he returned for a touchdown). Bernard is a sure-tackler that is one of the most underrated linebackers now in the Big 12 as a whole.

His overall defensive grade this season is at a career-best, as he’s doing really well through just two games played.
