1) 2021 Texas basketball signees who can make an immediate impact: Tamar Bates

As the highest rated prospect in the Longhorns 2021 recruiting class, the four-star IMG Academy 6-foot-4 and 175 pound shooting guard Tamar Bates brings a staggering amount of value to the table for Smart. Adding Bates to the 2021 class was huge since Texas got a more well-rounded group of potential signees to bring to the Forty Acres.

Not only is Bates the highest rated commit in the 2021 class, he was also the latest to give his pledge. Bates was the end of that huge wave of momentum that Smart and the Longhorns found on the recruiting trail back in the summer months. The commitment of Bates specifically came back on Aug. 28, 2020.

Bates ranks as the nation’s No. 103 2021 high school prospect, No. 26 shooting guard, and No. 13 prospect out of Florida (247Sports Composite). And the Top247 ranks him as the nation’s No. 97 high school prospect, No. 22 shooting guard, and No. 14 prospect out of Florida.

He chose Texas over offers from more than 15 other schools. The other highlighting schools on Bates’ offer sheet includes the Creighton Blue Jays, Colorado Buffaloes, Alabama Crimson Tide, Iowa State, Kansas Jayhawks, Kansas State Wildcats, Mizzou, Northwestern Wildcats, Oklahoma Sooners, Oklahoma State Cowboys, Oregon Ducks, Virginia Tech Hokies, and Wichita State Shockers.

The impact that Bates brings to the table for the Longhorns is one that could see him get a starting role immediately out of the gates. He’s got a rather polished skill set that really stands out on the offensive end of the floor. Bates is adept to creating his own shot, effectively distributing the ball as a legit playmaker in settled offense and transition, and an efficient shooter overall. He’s improving as a defense, which is likely the weaker point of his game.
