Texas Basketball: 3 takeaways from Maui Invitational final win over UNC
1) Takeaways from Texas basketball’s win over UNC
It is the complete frontcourt rotation that wins the day
Outside of getting outrebounded like they did against the Tar Heels, the frontcourt rotation was sensational for the Longhorns throughout much of the Maui Invitational. Texas got fantastic performances from different sources up to this point, from the likes of sophomore forward Brock Cunningham, freshman power forward Greg Brown, sophomore big man Kai Jones, etc.
Sims wasn’t great in the final two games of the Maui Invitational, but there were other sources that Texas got valuable production from in their frontcourt rotation. Outside of Coleman, maybe the MVP (at least in the frontcourt rotation) for Smart and the Longhorns was Jones. Up until the second half against UNC, Jones remained perfect from the field on the season.
Jones still has only missed one field goal attempt all season, and is still perfect from beyond the arc. He has now shot 16-of-17 from the field and 3-of-3 from beyond the arc on the season. In this game in particular, he registered 12 points, eight rebounds, two assists, and one steal.
Texas also got help off the bench from the frontcourt rotation in this game from senior big man Royce Hamm Jr. Hamm was an absolute force on the defensive end. In total, he registered two points, five rebounds, one assist, one steal, and a whopping four blocks.
It’s hard to argue that the three top players in this game for the Longhorns were not Hamm, Coleman, and Jones. The type of production that Texas is getting from all of these frontcourt players and the backcourt pairing of Coleman and Ramey promises a lot of positive future results this season.
