Texas Football: 4 takeaways from dominant Alamo Bowl win over CU
2) Takeaways from Texas football’s win over Colorado
Alfred Collins shines for this shorthanded Texas defense
A few players really stood out on the defensive side of the ball for the Longhorns in the Alamo Bowl. They came out with a solid effort led by first-year defensive coordinator/safeties coach Chris Ash, who definitely had his group up for this game. And the main player to watch for this Texas defense was the former highly touted five-star recruit and freshman defensive lineman Alfred Collins.
Although it wasn’t just Collins that had a big game for this Texas defense. Talented junior linebacker and former converted safety DeMarvion Overshown nabbed his second pick of the season at an opportune time. Overshown and Collins both nabbed picks off of Colorado starting quarterback Sam Noyer.
Collins was an incredible interception that he could off what looked like a tipped ball. He was a real force to be reckoned with anchoring this defensive line. But hopefully he is fine after he left the game with an injury, and headed into the injury tent, in the fourth quarter.
Despite all of the absences for this Texas defense in the Alamo Bowl, this side of the ball played really well. Texas got nice contributions from every level of the defense. Texas allowed just three yards per carry, and less than 85 total rushing yards, to the breakthrough star sophomore Colorado running back Jarek Broussard.
And the Texas secondary didn’t allow a single passing touchdown, nabbed two picks, less than 200 passing yards, and a completion percentage well below 50. This is the type of production that would be really nice to see from Ash’s side of the ball heading into next year.
