1) Takeaways from Texas football’s win over Colorado

Tom Herman at least did a bit to help his case for job security

The biggest looming question mark for the Longhorns throughout most of the 2020 season was the job status of their fourth-year head coach Herman. A rough 2-2 start during the regular season brought about a lot of questions as to what Texas athletic director Chris del Conte would want to do for the future of this program.

At least Herman responded well down the stretch, beating Kansas State and Colorado by a combined margin of more than 70 points. Texas got this win over Colorado in the Alamo Bowl by the convincing final score of 55-23. And that was with the offense lightening up down the stretch in the fourth quarter, with their second through fourth string quarterbacks taking the reigns.

The problem that Herman will face with the Longhorns heading into the offseason is how he will respond on the recruiting trail for his 2021 and 2022 classes. Texas needs a jolt on the recruiting trail before National Signing Day 2021 arrives. And the 2022 class still doesn’t look very good following a crazy timeline of events this fall.

Herman and the Longhorns will round out the 2020 regular season with a record of 7-3 (5-3 Big 12), winning five of their final six games to round out this crazy campaign. Texas could finish around the top 15 of the major polls, which would be right around where they started this year.

That’s not going to be too impressive to Longhorns fans, but it might be enough to bring Herman back for the 2021 season.
