If Texas did want to add one more switchable guard to the mix that could either play in the starting unit or come off the bench, then a good option would be the former Arizona State Sun Devils 6-foot-2 and 170-pound sophomore combo guard Alonzo Verge Jr. Arizona State has lost a lot of talent to the transfer portal this offseason, and that could play to the Longhorns benefit.

Among their most detrimental losses to the transfer portal this offseason is the former blue-chip recruit and versatile guard Verge Jr. The 2019-20 PAC-12 Sixth Man of the Year improved his game in a few areas in a bigger role during his sophomore campaign than as a true freshman. He started in more than two-thirds of his games played but was still effective when coming off the bench.

Verge Jr. averaged 14.0 points per game, 3.9 rebounds, 3.8 assists, 1.2 steals, and 0.2 blocks, in the nearly 30 games he played in for the Sun Devils last season. And he shot 39.1 percent from the field, 33.3 percent from beyond the arc, and 80.9 percent from the free-throw line.

At his peak, Verge Jr. would give Beard and the Longhorns something they don’t have in the rotation right now. He’s a true spark plug that runs well in transition, can be a sneaky good perimeter defender, rebounds the ball well, and has a lot of untapped potential.

In certain ways, Verge Jr. is similar to what the Longhorns are getting out of Askew, but he would add some valuable depth for them in the backcourt. This would be a good final effort to round out the backcourt rotation by adding Verge Jr. to ensure that Beard is deep at this spot.
