Casey Thompson, QB

The 6-foot-1 and 200-pound redshirt junior quarterback Casey Thompson still looks to be the presumed favorite to be the starting signal-caller for Texas this fall. Sophomore Hudson Card will continually put up a worthy challenge for the starting quarterback job, but it looks to be Thompson’s job to lose heading into fall camp.

With Thompson showing out as more of a vocal leader during spring camp and summer workouts, Card will have a long way to go to win the starting job. The good news for both of these quarterbacks is that Sark will likely give plenty of opportunities this fall to each of them. Any major slip-ups from Thompson or Card, and the other could get their chance to shine.

Neither Thompson nor Card has a significant bit of proven game action under their belt. Thompson does have more reps and overall experience at the college level than Card, but both got the majority of their snaps in the Alamo Bowl win last season over the Colorado Buffaloes.

Why Thompson carries momentum into this season is the performance he put together in the Alamo Bowl last year. In that win over Colorado, Thompson registered 170 passing yards on 80 percent passing, good for four passing touchdowns and no picks. He also added 17 rushing yards on four attempts, with no rushing scores.

Thompson also had a solid showing in limited work in Texas’ regular season opener last year against the UTEP Miners. Thompson also didn’t toss any picks in that win over UTEP, while amassing 57 passing yards and two passing scores. That allowed Thompson to finish up last season as a whole with a completion percentage over 70, six passing touchdowns, 225 passing yards, and no picks.
