Texas Basketball: Full projected rotation with return of Courtney Ramey
Point Guard: Devin Askew
It is pretty switchable for what Beard can do for the Longhorns in the starting unit at the one. But we’re going to go with one of the transfer portal additions for Texas as the starting point guard at the outset of next season. Former Kentucky Wildcats freshman guard and five-star recruit Devin Askew surely rode some highs in Lexington last season.
But the production that Askew registered as a whole with Kentucky last season, especially on the offensive end of the floor, left a lot to be desired. Askew will need to make some serious strides this season to hang around in the starting five if there is another transfer portal addition on the way for Texas at point guard, or if someone else makes headway in the process.
There were a few things that Askew did well on the offensive end, but there’s still a long way for him to go. Askew ranked in the top 20 in the SEC last season in total assists and assists per game. He also sat in the top 25 in the SEC in steal percentage and block percentage. But that was about it for him among the SEC leaderboards.
Texas could count on Askew to be the primary facilitator of the offense. But most of the usage is likely to fall to the next two Longhorns players up on the list ahead of Askew out of the gates.
We still can’t overlook the impact that Askew’s distributing ability, court vision, and perimeter defense will bring to the table for Beard and the Longhorns next season. Texas will also be able to run more effectively in transition with Askew in this backcourt unit.
