Shooting Guard: Courtney Ramey

Although this won’t be as much of a shooting guard role as it will a combo guard, Ramey could technically start the season out at the two. For most of his time on the Forty Acres to date, Ramey played his minutes at the two next to the former Texas standout senior guard Matt Coleman.

But with Coleman taking his talents to the next level this year, Ramey will get his opportunity to be the highest usage guard in this offense. Ramey’s defensive ability should also come to the forefront considering he was a bit overshadowed in these regards by Coleman in the past few seasons.

There is no way that Ramey shouldn’t be in the starting five next season. His return does help to solidify the starting backcourt if Beard is comfortable with this type of hybrid two-combo guard system. Both Askew and Ramey possess the ability to be a quality two-way starting point guard, but neither is truly a one in every sense of the word.

Ramey got the first All-Big 12 Team selection of his career last season. And it was well earned considering how well he played during the regular season. He averaged a career-best 12.2 points per game, 3.2 rebounds, 3.9 assists, 1.0 steals, and 0.1 blocks. And Ramey shot 38.3 percent from the field, 41.4 percent from beyond the arc, and 83.1 percent from the free-throw line.

Beard is likely to use Ramey as his first or second highest-usage player in this new offensive scheme. Expect the volume at which Ramey shoots the ball from deep (4-5 times per game) around the same, but the ball to move around the perimeter a bit more fluently than it did previously between Coleman and Ramey.
