Texas Football: 3 upperclassmen with a lot to prove in fall camp
T’Vondre Sweat, DT
Definitely, the most productive and efficient upperclassmen Longhorns player on this list is the former underrated three-star recruit and junior defensive tackle T’Vondre Sweat. The problem for Sweat is the consistent depth that Texas has to anchor the defensive line. Texas remained deep at defensive/nose tackle in each of his three years on the Forty Acres.
This year is no exception, with the former four-star recruit and redshirt junior defensive tackle Keondre Coburn likely assuming a starting role in front of him.
If Sweat is able to prove himself in fall camp, and on the gridiron this season, then he should able to boost his draft stock significantly for the 2022 or 2023 NFL Draft class. Sweat will be eligible to take his talents to the next level in each of the next two offseasons. But it seems like Sweat will be around for as long as it takes for him to prove his stud status in college.
There’s no doubt that Sweat has earned himself a key spot in the defensive line rotation from here on out. What he has to prove in fall camp and on the field during the regular season is that he can continue to be one of the most disruptive and productive defensive linemen in the fold for new co-defensive coordinators/linebackers coaches Jeff Choate and Pete Kwiatkowski.
The good news for Sweat is that if he gets in a little bit better shape this offseason, he could gets reps in the middle of the defensive line, or at the defensive tackle spot. That would mean he would have to edge out the likes of Moro Ojomo and Alfred Collins for reps. But that is certainly doable if Sweat can continue to be one of the most efficient defensive linemen for Texas.
