Texas Football: 4 biggest 2022 recruiting flops of the summer
Kelvin Banks, OT
The highest-ranked prospect on this list that was a huge miss for new offensive line coach/offensive coordinator Kyle Flood and the Longhorns last month was the elite five-star Summer Creek offensive tackle Kelvin Banks. The Oregon Ducks swiped away the commitment from the 6-foot-5 and 300-pound Banks over the likes of the Longhorns and Texas A&M Aggies.
Throughout most of the recruitment of Banks in 2021, prior to his commitment to Oregon last month, Texas and Texas A&M looked like the firm leaders. But Oregon made a very late run to win over the interests of two key Texas offensive line targets in Banks and three-star Cam Williams.
Texas did make up for the loss of Banks in some regard by landing a pair of commitments last month from three-star Westlake interior offensive lineman Connor Robertson and four-star Frisco interior offensive lineman Cole Hutson. But the fact of the matter is that the Longhorns still need to add some bodies at the offensive tackle position in the 2022 class.
And while getting a commitment from the five-star Bowie offensive lineman Devon Campbell would be massive for the 2022 class, he’s not likely to move over to offensive tackle. That’s why missing out on Banks was so detrimental for Flood and the Longhorns. The push should still remain, though, to try as hard as possible to flip Banks to Texas by the time the Early Signing Period arrives.
What Texas missed out on with Banks committing to Oregon was the nation’s No. 14 2022 high school prospect, No. 2 offensive tackle, and No. 4 prospect out of Texas (247Sports Composite).
