Maybe the most versatile running back that Texas has on the roster this fall is the experienced former converted quarterback and junior Roschon Johnson. Bringing back more than 1,250 total yards from scrimmage and 15 touchdowns for the Longhorns this fall, Johnson is somehow one of the most underrated running backs in the Big 12.

Johnson has split time in the backfield with a number of other running backs during his three years on the Forty Acres. At the outset of last season, it was then junior Keaontay Ingram that looked to split the carries with Johnson. As the season moved along, though, it was breakout freshman Bijan Robinson that split the time out of the backfield with Johnson.

Despite the addition of the former Alabama Crimson Tide sophomore running back Keilan Robinson out of the NCAA Transfer Portal this offseason, Roschon is still the second running back on the depth chart in Week 1. And Johnson should truly be able to find a good rhythm with a quarterback that can effectively escape the pocket and hit his targets on the rollout like Card.

The threat of Card’s arm and his underrated running ability should also help to open things up for Johnson. Meanwhile, Thompson doesn’t have as consistent of an arm from what we know about the two quarterbacks, compared to Card.

If Card is in a rhythm out of the gates in Week 1, it will play to the benefit of all of the running backs. But one that is called upon to block and be an outlet as a receiver in the passing game like Johnson should really be able to benefit from the talented and elusive Card.
