Johntay Cook, WR

Among the top early 2023 prospects to know that are targets of the Longhorns is the highly touted four-star DeSoto wide receiver Johntay Cook II. The 6-foot and 170-pound Cook is definitely one of the highest-rated skill position targets that the Longhorns have offered for the 2023 class thus far.

Although he nearly has three dozen schools on his offer sheet as of Sep. 5, Cook was able to narrow down his list with another round of finalist cuts this weekend. He released his top 12 schools on his Twitter timeline on Sep. 4. So this was good timing for Texas to show out the way they did in the win over Louisiana on the same day that Cook dropped his top 12.

Some of the most notable of his top 12 finalist schools are the Alabama Crimson Tide, Oklahoma Sooners, Oregon Ducks, Ohio State Buckeyes, LSU Tigers, USC Trojans, and the Longhorns.

Texas has new special teams coordinator/tight ends coach Jeff Banks and second-year wide receivers coach Andre Coleman as the top recruiters going after Cook. And they’re making progress with him by most indications so far.

Cook kept it simple in terms of what he reportedly had to say about Texas following this big win over Louisiana. He mentioned that the game “was lit” and that he loves it for Texas.

Continuing to make progress with Cook in the coming weeks and months will be key as he’s one of the top targets of the 2023 class. He ranks as the nation’s No. 45 2023 high school prospect, No. 8 wide receiver, and No. 8 prospect out of Texas (247Sports Composite).
