Texas Football: 3 reasons why the Longhorns will annihilate Rice
Casey Thompson and Bijan Robinson lead an explosive offense ready to make some noise
The Texas offense couldn’t get anything going on a sustained basis throughout really the first three quarterbacks in the loss to Arkansas last weekend. It was the opposite story for the Rice offense in their loss to Arkansas two weeks ago. Arkansas shut down Rice in the second half after they trailed for most of the first half.
Sark and the Longhorns will give the nod to redshirt junior quarterback Casey Thompson as the starter over sophomore Hudson Card this weekend. This is a well-deserved start for Thompson after the way he performed coming on in relief of Card in the loss to Arkansas.
Thompson led the Longhorns to two straight scoring drives, where Card barely could lead this offense to one last weekend.
And although Thompson looked really good in the fourth quarter against the Hogs and in the Alamo Bowl win last season over the Colorado Buffaloes, he’ll likely be giving the ball a lot early to star sophomore running back Bijan Robinson. There’s no reason for Texas to turn away from using Bijan as the spark plug for this offense.
If Bijan was able to go off against a stout and experienced Louisiana defense in the regular season opener, he should be able to decimate this Rice defense. In the first two games of the season, Rice has allowed nearly 200 rushing yards per game, five yards per carry, and a whopping 3.5 rushing scores.
Expect Bijan to respond in a big way in this meeting with Rice. Despite the down game vs. Arkansas in terms of rushing yards (69 and one rushing score in that game), Bijan still managed seven missed tackles forced.
