Texas Football: 4 takeaways from explosive win over Texas Tech
Xavier Worthy and Casey Thompson leading an explosive passing game
You can’t help but notice how good the former Michigan Wolverines blue-chip commit and true freshman wide receiver Xavier Worthy was in the passing game for the Longhorns in the last two games. Worthy came up with a huge performance again this weekend to help the Longhorns get this five-possession win over a hapless Red Raiders defense.
In this win over Texas Tech, Worthy led the way in the receiving game for the Longhorns. On just five catches, Worthy mustered 100 receiving yards, an impressive 20 yards per catch, and a career-best three receiving scores. In the last two weeks, Worthy is now sitting with nearly 200 receiving yards and four receiving touchdowns.
This is a huge weapon that redshirt junior quarterback Casey Thompson has found in the receiving corps this season. The ability to read the defense and hit the intermediate and deep routes with precise timing by Thompson is allowing Sark to maximize the insane physical tools and elusiveness that Worthy brings to the table.
Moreover, Thompson had another special game for Texas as the starting quarterback. In this game, he registered 18 completions on 23 passing attempts, good for just over 300 passing yards, 13.2 yards per attempt, six total touchdowns, and one pick. About the only mistake that Thompson made on the day was a bad pick that he threw to Tech in the endzone on a play where he just tried to do too much.
All in all, Texas has a great outlook in the passing game, spearheaded by the quarterback-wide receiver connection between Thompson and Worthy. These two are on fire in the last two weeks.
