Texas Football: 5 takeaways from the crippling collapse vs. OU
Caleb Williams is likely Oklahoma’s starter moving forward
Riley deserves credit for pulling the inconsistent sophomore quarterback Spencer Rattler when he did in this game. Rattler had two costly turnovers for the Sooners in the first half, leading to some critical points for the Longhorns. A pick by Foster and a forced fumble by the former Alabama graduate transfer Ben Davis were big for Texas early on in this game.
But once Rattler was getting rattled in the first half, Riley decided to turn to another former elite five-star quarterback recruit in Williams. Sooner fans had called for Williams to be the starter in that crazy chant from the student section in Norman in their close win over the West Virginia Mountaineers a couple of weekends ago.
Nonetheless, Williams came up with a few huge plays that led to the Sooners getting this win. It was the spark that Brooks and Wiliams gave the Sooners in the second half that helped their comeback win in Red River.
Williams was making plays off-schedule and got a lot of help from some talented wide receivers and an absent Texas secondary in the second half.
All in all, it looks like all of the momentum and confidence with this Oklahoma offense is with Williams at the moment. It would be tough to say that it’s a smart move for Riley to roll with Rattler from here on out this fall.
It is very true that the Longhorns defense couldn’t stop much of anything in the second half of this game. But Williams was a catalyst that helped Oklahoma pull off a massive three-possession comeback when it was all said and done.
