One truly impactful addition that Beard and the Longhorns got out of the transfer portal during the offseason is the former UMass Minutemen star sophomore center, Tre Mitchell. The two-time All-Atlantic 10 Team selection and 2019-20 A-10 Newcomer of the Year is likely going to be one of the most capable big men in the Big 12 right away.

If Beard does want to run with Mitchell and Disu as his starting frontcourt at the outset of the regular season, Texas will have a very versatile and potent unit that will be hard to match by any team around the country. Texas might want to have more of a traditional big man that can defend and rebound with the best of them in the paint, but these two are definitely a pairing worth consideration among the starting five this season.

The 6-foot-10 and 240-pound Mitchell has a lot of the tools necessary to make an impact at the next level. Just like Disu, he’s a capable floor spacer and a decent enough rim protector. And Mitchell has all of the physical tools that you’d want in the NBA. He’s got a good wingspan, solid leaping ability, and enough strength to contend down low with most big men.

Mitchell has a solid fundamental shooting stroke that saw him nail this three-point tries last season at a clip just shy of 38 percent.

The questions with the likes of Mitchell and Disu will remain how attractive they will be as upperclassmen NBA prospects that have good, but not elite, physical tools. They have versatile skill sets that could make them solid reserve big men in the NBA, though.
