Too many standout defenders for Texas

I mentioned it on the last slide, but Beard and the Longhorns should have a real shot to bounce back defensively given all of the standout defenders on this team. Texas got demolished down low in the loss to Gonzaga, with star big man Drew Timme going off for a game and career-high 37 points last weekend.

One particular Longhorns player that I believe can have a huge outing against Northern Colorado is the redshirt senior shooting guard/wing Andrew Jones. Playing most of his minutes at the three so far this season, Jones has found a very proficient role for himself in Beard’s system. Jones is shooting around 55 percent from the field and 45 percent from beyond the arc through two games.

Jones has also averaged around three steals per game and one block. He’s off to a great start on both ends of the floor, highlighted by a stellar 7.6 box plus/minus and a career-high .202 win shares per 40 minutes.

But the fact of the matter is that Texas has too many standout defenders for Northern Colorado to likely matchup with at the Erwin Center on this night. The senior forward duo of Timmy Allen and Christian Bishop are tremendous on-ball defenders, as are Askew and freshman forward Jaylon Tyson.

This just seems like a game where the Longhorns will be motivated to do all they can to shut down their opposition defensively, especially given what happened last weekend against the Zags.
